It processes proteins synthesized in the rough endoplasmic reticulum and assists in the transport of protein cargo through the Golgi apparatus. The expression of this gene has been observed to be upregulated in response to viral infection. Alternatively spliced transcript variants encoding the same protein have been described for this gene.

Mammalian lens crystallins are divided into alpha, beta, and gamma families. Alpha crystallins consist of two gene products, alpha-A (acidic) and alpha-B (basic), and belong to the small heat shock protein (HSP20) family. Induced by heat shock, they act as molecular chaperones by forming large soluble aggregates, rather than renaturing proteins like true chaperones. These aggregates consist of 30-40 subunits, with a 3:1 ratio of alpha-A to alpha-B subunits. Alpha crystallins also have autokinase activity and contribute to intracellular architecture. The encoded protein is a "moonlighting" protein, performing distinct functions. Alpha-A is primarily expressed in the lens, while alpha-B is found in many tissues. Elevated alpha-B expression is linked to neurological diseases, and a missense mutation is associated with desmin-related myopathy. Alternative splicing results in multiple transcript variants.

This gene belongs to a family of Sp1 related genes that encode transcription factors that regulate transcription by binding to consensus GC- and GT-box regulatory elements in target genes. This protein contains a zinc finger DNA-binding domain and several transactivation domains, and has been reported to function as a bifunctional transcription factor that either stimulates or represses the transcription of numerous genes. Transcript variants encoding different isoforms have been described for this gene, and one has been reported to initiate translation from a non-AUG (AUA) start codon. Additional isoforms, resulting from the use of alternate downstream translation initiation sites, have also been noted. A related pseudogene has been identified on chromosome 13.
